The three objects in this work were found in local second-hand stores. They are still warm, and they carry my nostalgia with them. During a move, I had no chance to bid them a proper farewell; I parted from them reluctantly, with complicated feelings. That parting led me to consider the past and future lives of second-hand furniture. Such objects are always taking leave of one owner, only to be carried into the next home by another, where they remain for a time. A chair, a bed, a bench: each is wholly useful in its place and moment, lending a new aspect to a new house and a new idea of home. Yet some are eventually replaced, perhaps because they never truly belonged to that place at all.
Vancouver is much the same. People arrive here for many reasons; they come to know one another, and in the end they leave for wherever they are needed. It is a city many call "the city of goodbyes." Its people are the furniture being traded, and the travellers in its stations and airports saying, "See you again."
